“You know when you’re little nobody says, ‘You can grow up and be a rapper’”.
With the influence of hearing her mom spit bars in the studio, Megan knew from a young age that she wanted to be a rapper. The 24-year-old’s city of Houston is the home of legends including her biggest influence, Pimp C, where she emulated his confidence and through her bars has instilled it in her fans, The Hotties, to follow suit.
Megan told Refinery29, “Growing up listening to these men and how powerful and confident they seemed, I just thought, ‘Oh my God. This would sound really good if a girl was saying all this’”.
What started off as writing at the age of 14, holding her own in male-dominated cyphers and viral freestyles has now turned into a career that is skyrocketing.
Along with her confidence, Megan values the power of determination and discipline. While the H-Town Hottie is taking the crown as the rap Queen of her city and First Lady of 300 Entertainment, she is pursuing a bachelor’s in health administration at Texas Southern University. She doesn’t want to get caught up in the fame, losing focus in school and vice versa. She’s an inspiration that it’s possible to follow both your dream and an education; the two aren’t mutually exclusive as many in the industry believe.
People have compared Megan to artists like Trina, but comparison steals from the joy of watching an artist’s growth. Megan balances her music alter egos (Thee Stallion, Tina Snow and Hot Girl Meg) that make up her fiery personality and she delivers authentic energy through her flow that listeners are connected to. Once you hear “Ah!” or “Hot Girl Sh*t”, it’s a wrap, you’re tuned into Hottie World and turnt up.
Although Megan has made a lane for herself in H-Town and her music is starting to chart, she makes it clear that it’s all love and support for other ladies of rap; Maliibu Miitch, Kash Doll and Asian Doll to name a few. She pushes past the narrative of the media pitting female rappers against one another.
Majority of rappers lack stage presence and fail at connecting with their crowd, but Megan always turns her shows out in every city.
What truly makes Megan a stand out artist is that even though she’s dedicated to her craft, she understands she’s only in competition with herself and genuinely has fun within her music which is what the industry needs more of. She’s a woman that’s not afraid to openly be sexy, outspoken and lit. Megan Thee Stallion is one of today’s rappers that’s bringing a refreshing sound while also taking us back to how hype that old school rap once made us feel.
