Cassette tapes. Remember those? My personal favorite memory of them is during car rides when my mom would pop one of them in. It was the early 2000's, but my Nigerian mom still hadn't fully hopped on board with CD's just yet. Her tapes were her prized possession and she would hit play until the spool would start falling out.
My favorite tape was Whitney Houston's. Even though I wasn't old enough to truly understand Whitney's pain of making the scary decision of falling in love, I would sing "How Will I Know" with so much passion. This was the beginning of music becoming my first love.
I would sit alongside my older sister while she would watch throwback music videos of Lauryn Hill and Brandy while basking in how cool and full of energy that their music made us feel. The first time I watched the video for "Doo Wop (That Thing)" is still a fresh memory.
In honor of Black Music Month, I have created a playlist of a few Black artists, both old school and new school, that have made me appreciate and adore the art that is music.
Which Black artists made you fall in love with music? Let me know in the comments below!
