The 23-year-old has an old soul living through her and it is embedded into her sound. What sets apart real soul from the fake is when a voice can stand alone with minimal production and evoke emotion. Aleana's voice has the ability to do just that. It's evident in her music that she's influenced by fellow Philly native and Neo Soul legend, Jill Scott. Along with her old school vibe, her music makes me reminisce SZA's older discography (Z).
Chapter 22 is a solid project for Aleana's step into the path of being an upcoming artist to keep your eyes on. My current favorite on the 6-track EP is "Dear Darla". I believe this is the standout track because listeners are able to feel the raw emotion of the very relatable situation of whoever she's personally singing to. Although, my favorite line on the EP comes from "Careless" where we see the transition of Aleana's pain and regret over an ex lover to giving zero f****.
"It's no wonder why I'm so careless, Cause the way you move is so careless, I don't even care if you're jealous, I'm moving on and I could care less". I'm a stan for wordplay and being unapologetic.
