As the world of music continues to become oversaturated, it has become even more difficult for authentic talented artists to get the proper recognition that they deserve. Producers, engineers and songwriters are the unsung heroes of the industry that are the musicians behind the scenes responsible for taking all your favorite hits to the next level. Although at times these professions are overlooked, Ben "iamBNJMIIN" Thomas is an example of a musician that's genuinely dedicated to his craft and works hard without any expectations.
For majority of his life, Thomas has lived in one of the most influential cities of music, Philadelphia, PA. He also lived in Richmond, VA but moved back to Philadelphia and attended Temple University and was enrolled in the Fox School of Business as a finance major.
But, Thomas always had a passion for music. He's skilled in playing the guitar, bass, drums and piano. His interest in music grew in the 7th grade during a school play which led to making mixtapes. After taking the first step back in grade school, he started receiving opportunities, such as attending GRAMMY camp, that would continue to push him as a audio engineer and producer.
During his first few semesters at Temple, Thomas would help mix the playlists for DJs and produce for some fellow students on campus. He eventually met his now music partner and best friend, Chill Moody, which led him to connect with major music companies in Philadelphia including Rec Philly.
His networking got him the opportunity to intern at Anthony Bell's studio. The internship sparked one of most pivotal moments in his career so far of working with Jazmine Sullivan. He worked on her and Bryson Tiller's track "Insecure" which became a great success and was picked up by creator and actress Issa Rae.
While balancing being a college student, a music intern and a financial analyst, Thomas worked with artists such as Ty Dolla $ign and Jeremih. He has also worked with R&B legend Brian McKnight on his latest album, Genesis. The project earned him two Soul Train Award nominations and a NAACP Award nomination.
His credits continue to grow as he expands on the genres of music that he works on. What sets Thomas apart from the crowd is that he's a musician that genuinely loves what he does by helping others with their music for their shared passion.
No matter how little or how big the artist, he has always kept the motto of putting 110% in whatever he does. The young prodigy's number one dream during his career is to win a Grammy and he is very well on his way to soon holding one in his hands.
